July 1, 1903 was born Rudolf Ivanovich Abel (real name – William H. Fisher) – Soviet spy, Colonel.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom), the son of Russian political refugees. His father – a native of Yaroslavl province, from a family of Russified Germans, an active participant in revolutionary activities. Mother – a native of the city of Saratov. Also participated in the revolutionary movement. During which the spouses Fisher in 1901 were sent abroad and settled in good old England.

Since childhood, Willie differed persistently in character and was a good student. He showed particular interest in the natural sciences. At 16 years of age he passed his examinations at the University of London. In 1920, the Fisher family returned to Moscow, USSR. Willie was involved as a translator to work in the department of international relations of the ECCI.

In 1924 he entered the Indian branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow, successfully completing the first year. However, he was called up for military service and enlisted in the First Regiment Radiotelegraphic, Moscow Military District. After demobilization, Willie went to work in the Institute of Air Force. In 1927 Fisher was hired by INO OGPU as assistant commissioner. He carried out important instructions guided through clandestine intelligence in two European countries. He was acting radioman during illegal residency, whose activities covered several European countries. Upon his return to Moscow he was promoted for successful task execution. He was promoted to Lieutenant of State Security, which corresponded to the UK rank of Major.

At the end of 1938 without explanation Fisher was dismissed from intelligence. This was due to mistrust of Beria to the staff who worked with the'”enemies of the people,’ – Beria’s interpretation.Fisher got a job at the All-Union Chamber of Commerce, and later moved to an aviation industry plant. Repeatedly he called for the restoration of his prior work in  intelligence reporting.

In September 1941, his request was granted. Fisher was enrolled in the unit, which organized subversive groups and guerrilla groups at the rear of the Nazi occupiers. During this period he became friends with fellow worker  Abel RI, whose name shall be called later designate,  ‘arrested’. Fisher trained radio operators preparing for guerrilla groups and reconnaissance teams sent into the country occupied by Germany.

After the war Fisher returned to work in clandestine intelligence. In November 1948 it was decided to send him to work illegally in the United States to obtain information from sources, working in nuclear facilities. Courier-agents for ‘Mark’ (a pseudonym for Fisher) were allocated a wife named Cohen. Together they were so successful with organizational issues that in August 1949 for the results, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

To offload  ‘Mark of current affairs, – to assist him, in 1952 was sent a radioman clandestine intelligence Heyhanen (alias ‘Vic’). ‘Vic’ was morally and psychologically unstable, abused alcohol, spending public money et cetera. Four years later, the decision was made regarding his return to Moscow. However,  ‘Vic’ went into betrayal mode and told U.S. authorities everything about his work. In 1957, ‘Mark’ (Fisher) was arrested by FBI counter-intelligence agents at a hotel.

In order to give Moscow knowledge about his arrest and that he was not a traitor, Fisher arrest was named after his late friend R. Abel. During the investigation, he categorically denied that they belonged to the ‘exploration’, he refused to testify at trial and rejected attempts by U.S. intelligence to persuade him to commit treason. After the announcement of the sentence ‘Mark’ was first placed in solitary confinement at a remand prison in New York, and then was transferred to the federal correctional prison in Atlanta, GA. On February 10, 1962 on the border between West and East Berlin, on the Glienicke Bridge, he was exchanged for the American pilot Francis Gary Powers who had been shot down on May 1, 1960, near Sverdlovsk and convicted by a Soviet court of spying for the USA. After rest and treatment Fisher returned to his work in the central office of intelligence. He participated in the training of young scouts or spies.

He died in Moscow, on November 15, 1971. He was buried in Donskoy Cemetery, in Moscow.
For outstanding achievements in ensuring national security of the USSR, Colonel V.Fisher was awarded the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, Order of the Red Banner of Labor, World War 1 degree, Red Star and many medals.
