Thus, if one was to state that leadership was manipulation and a mutually adjusting circumstance better for some than is a leader, would I be correct? I ask because I don’t know. There are leaders who have been for good and for ill and all appeal to instincts and often have stated that their ideals are the ones to accept and if left, people merely mark time or something akin to it. It is the leader that does bind a group, through the position that he or she occupies in the ‘unconscious life’ of the group. For example with regard to the Armed Forces, Freud would posit that members of the ‘Unit’ experience ‘ intense emotional ties’ to the leader who is the Commander) and importantly to each other. The influence of unconscious dynamics within the Unit is illustrated with the example of felt anxiety in a battle situation. If the Unit Commander falls, group members can forsake the very relatedness that brought them together, as well as the task of battle, thus as a result begin to lose control.@
It is that the shared emotional experience of Unit members rests upon a shared identification with, and idealization of the leader. Each Unit member identifies with the leader and thus each individual identifies with all other Unit members, who share the same relationship to the leader as themselves. This leads to a definition of ‘Unit’ which has at its core the shared unconscious experience of Unit members.@
Think of it this way, that Units represent a unique type of love bond, in which the sexual element has been replaced by an emotional attachment, one in which sexual energy is redirected into social ties. Thus individuals do sacrifice their uniqueness and individuality, in return for the stability of union and group power. In their relationships to their Commanders, personnel sacrifice their independence for that of protection, order and authority. The Unit is that of an omnipotent leader who embodies the qualities of the feared father whose will and power is of the unquestionable. This is worthy of much consideration in view of how we are perceived by those who know little to nothing whatsoever regarding who else we dwell among and exactly what of ours is at risk, the extent of that risk. How are we perceived in our place in society? Agencies are asked to justify themselves because there are those within and near who see fit to use whatever opportunity available to criticize, accuse and attack. The whistle blowers are given credibility. Why? Is it because these who are critical are typical of the voices emerging and competing for prominence, after all we live in a free society and views can be openly conveyed, yet these voices are damaging to a no lesser extent than those who see victory in our ruination. Everything is at risk in this fragile suspension, this continuity that is in danger of capitulation. The primary task is to ensure continuity and in this continuity the safety of our citizens and this is not easily achieved given the nature and extent of the hatred being leveled against us and its sophistication. Hatred is a natural human accompaniment to the conscious state; it is no different now than at any point throughout the ages. What is different in this era is the vehicle available for its manifestation which is; the terrorist and the weapons of mass destruction and elements thereof that are becoming much more easily available. Couple this with the constantly emerging threats to our economic infrastructure and the effect on our composure becomes greater at an ever increasing rate and thus, so do the methods at our disposal that we have to devise and use to counter this. This facet of life is not easy to accept let alone understand because it is seen to constitute an assault on the taken for granted life worlds and their multiplicity of predictabilities that are the common collective. Yet all of the time there are those who want to make our society into something else and as stated, the gravity of that desire is not so easily grasped, nor is our own obsessive desire to both understand and react to their judgments and actions. What have we become in our time, as we dwell among primitives and their convoluted verbage? What have we become as we dwell among those who see fit to reinforce their psycho pathologies, to fund and to arm them with some of the most lethal weapons available? We have become a very powerful vehicle militarily and with all the requisite facility that this military involves. We can respond, we can offer gestures and which say precisely what we want them to say. We are the most capable and yet there is the meaningless and the pointless that has always sat in human time, its collective madness.
