The United States and the Russia Federation. Nuclear missile confrontation. The return of the Cold War

Julian Borger in an article titled, “The United States and Russia on the brink of a new nuclear arms race “, published in the newspaper The Guardian, wrote that the fracture between Moscow and Washington has increased considerably because of the cruise missiles and increasingly rapid appearances of Russian submarines which are most likely equipped with a nuclear weapons. This can lead to the end of the era of arms control and return the dangerous rivalry between the two countries with the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons.<\/span>
\nTensions reached a new level with the US announcement of retaliatory measures if Russia develops a new cruise missile. Washington said that it violates the terms of one of the major treaties on arms control during the Cold War, and informed of the possibility of the return of US cruise missiles in Europe after 23-year absence.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the day after Christmas in the sky over Washington climbed the first of two experimental airships that was another visible sign of much anxiety. The system, known as JLENS, is designed to ensure the detection of approaching cruise missiles. “Americans is well known,” – it said in the article. “They were sure before, that Russia will never rise again. Now it’s too late.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The new version of the Russian military doctrine, published on December 25, the provisions of the policy of nuclear weapons have not changed compared to four years earlier. They should only be used in case of an attack using weapons of mass destruction or during an attack using conventional weapons, when it “threatens the existence of the state.” We are not talking about a preemptive strike, as suggested by some members of the army leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brian McKeon said the Pentagon is considering various options for response to the emergence of the Russian cruise missile, including the placement of unique systems\u00a0 in Europe. “We have a few options though. Some of them do not contradict the provisions of the treaty, and some contract compliance. We are ready to present them to our leadership, if it chooses this path,” – said McKeon. The US military has also been very concerned regarding the revival of the Russian submarine fleet.
